4 Things Every Parent Should Know

When Choosing A Dance Studio

If most dance studios seem to have qualified teachers and a big show at the end of the year, aren’t they all pretty much the same? Does it really matter which place you decide to enroll at? Yes. There are 4 main things that can make a huge difference in the quality of instruction your child receives, the amount of extra work and hassles the parents must deal with and the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of being involved with a dance/acting program. Here are 4 things that every parent should consider before deciding on a fine arts school for their child:

1. What type of facility do we have?

Our studio is a large, clean state of the art building. Over the summer renovations take place to keep the studio in top-notch shape. Dance is a very physical activity that requires a lot of jumping, which can put stress on bones and joints. Most dance footwear does not provide any cushioning or support, so the shock of the dance movement can place a lot of pressure on the knees and back of a dancer. The best way to prevent against potential injury is by choosing a studio with a professional floating dance floors, which cushions the shock of jumping. To also compliment our studio we have full-length mirrors,  fans and air-conditioning for the overall comfort of our students, as well as lockers for those students who wish to leave their belongings locked up safely. We also offer a waiting area with cable TV, viewing windows and wireless internet for the parents/guardians while they wait for their children in class.

2. Can I get immediate assistance and customer service?

In many studios the teacher or the studio owner conducts classes and does the administration. By trying to do two jobs at once, the class may suffer as the teacher has to use class time for customer service issues, or the studio may have no customer service available if the teacher is in a class. To have a good experience it is important to choose a studio that can assist you with details like costumes or schedules, even if a teacher is occupied in a class. Our studio has office staff available 3 days a week, to assist with any questions and/or concerns you may have while your child is in class.

3. Our staff

Although some studios have qualified teachers, one of the key elements of successful teaching is the teacher’s ability to relate to the students. There are two parts to learning dance successfully, highly qualified instructors and a good relationship between the student and teacher so the dance knowledge can be passed on. The students self esteem and self confidence is a top priority.

4. Well Rounded Performers

While many studios feature a year-end recital showcasing the routines that the students have been working on throughout the year, Xtreme Students get many opportunities to perform. XT has taken part in events such as "Habitat for Humanity", "BC West Coast Women's Show", backup dancers for singer/songwriter Nikita Graham, and has also had the opportunity to represent Canada in the 2008 Dance World Cup. In addition to these events we also attend 4 competitions annually with our competitive company and also feature 2 year end productions. 1 year-end dance recital, as well as 1 Broadway Musical. Our annual musical gives students a chance to shine in all art forms such as singing, dancing and acting. Giving students the opportunity to perform as often as possible is our goal at Xtreme and something our students have come to enjoy very much.
